Sleepytime Tea & Cannabis Pairings for Healthy Rest

Do you have trouble falling or staying asleep? You’re not alone! Almost 50% of Americans have problems related to a healthy night’s sleep, which can negatively impact day-to-day living. Thankfully, there are a handful of sleepytime tea and other remedies out there that can help alleviate restlessness, including some of our favorite herbs. Cannabis has long been used as a sleep aid, and with the ability to now grow and select certain strains, it’s even easier to figure out which ones work best at night. Combine that with a soothing cup of warm tea and you have a recipe for a peaceful night’s rest. Check out some of our favorite cannabis and tea pairings that will help you have sweet dreams all night long.

Valerian Root & Bubba Kush

Valerian root is pretty powerful, particularly when it comes to relaxation and sleep. This herbal sleep aid increases your Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which inhibits nerve transmission in the brain, effectively calming any nervous activity. But what does that actually mean? Basically, valerian has certain compounds that act as a mild sedative, telling your brain that it’s time to shut off and go to sleep. Look for teas that have valerian as a starring ingredient (like Traditional Medicine’s Nighty Night tea), or make your own by steeping a teaspoon of valerian root in boiling water for 15 minutes. Make sure to strain your tea first before drinking.

Before hitting the sack, take a few puffs of Bubba Kush while sipping some valerian tea and you’ll be sleeping like a log in no time at all. After all, Bubba Kush is well known for it’s heavy tranquilizing effects, making it the perfect strain to pair with valerian. Your whole body will receive the ultimate in relaxation, allowing for a deep sleep while the valerian tea helps soothe your mind.

Lemon Balm & Granddaddy Purple

Lemon balm is a citrusy scented herb from the mint family that is incredibly helpful when it comes to insomnia. One of its herbal powers is the lowering of anxiety, which can sometimes stand in the way of a good night’s sleep. You can find it as a main ingredient in many commercial teas, or get tea that is solely lemon balm, like the organic option from Buddha Teas.

Enjoy some sips of lemon balm tea with a few hits of Granddaddy Purple and you’ll be sure to float into a deep sleep. An indica classic, Granddaddy Purple has high levels of the sleep-inducing terpene myrcene. This strain will not only help lull you to sleep with its fast acting potency, but will ease any aches and pains that may be keeping you up at night, as it has strong analgesic properties. Plus, the berry and grape flavors present in Granddaddy Kush will nicely compliment the soft citrus notes of lemon balm tea, making it a delicious pairing that will ensure you a sweet night of sleep.

Kava & Blueberry Kush

Some people have compared Kava to Xanax for it’s amazing calming properties, it’s just that potent. A cup of tea made direct from kava root will have a sedative effect on your nervous system, and can even lead to a slight numbness in your mouth. While small doses of kava are perfectly healthy, take caution that you don’t go overboard, as the herb can have possible negative effects on your liver. Yogi Tea has a Kava Stress Relief tea that is perfectly blended to give you all the relaxing benefits of the herb without worry of drinking too much of it.

A hybrid of Blueberry and OG Kush, Blueberry Kush is the perfect strain to pair some kava tea with. Not only does it help eliminate any lingering pain preventing a good night’s sleep, it will also allow your mind to lull itself into a calm space. The spicey, blueberry flavor of the cannabis will play perfectly into the herbal kava, providing a tasty way to head into dreamland.

Lavender & Harlox

Sometimes, all that’s standing between you and a night of deep sleep is all the worries passing through your head. Anxiety is a real sleep disruptor, so why not attack it with two powerful stress-reducing herbs? Lavender not only smells dreamy, but is a proven effective sleep-aid. A cup of lavender tea will help soothe your worries, allowing for better sleep and overall health. You can easily make your own tea out of fresh or dried lavender flowers, or pick up a pre-made mix featuring the herb, like Teavana’s Lavender Dreams White Tea.

Harlox is a favorite strain of many folks who medicate for anxiety. While it is a strong indica, it also has a high CBD percentage, allowing for a nice, mellow, body high that helps you fall into a comfortable sleep. Plus, the dark berry notes in Harlox work beautifully with lavenders strong floral properties. The two together will have you all blissed out for a night of peaceful sleep.

Chamomile & God’s Gift

Chamomile is probably one of the more well-known floral herbs that help with sleep issues. A cup of chamomile at the end of the day helps prepare your body and mind for bedtime. And, in addition to being an excellent sleep aid, Chamomile also has antioxidants and antimicrobial properties that can help boost your overall health and immunity. Many store bought teas include chamomile in their night time teas, including the popular Sleepytime Tea Blend by Celestial Seasonings.

Tasting of citrus, grape and hash, God’s Gift makes the perfect pairing with chamomile. The anti-anxiety and relaxing components of this indica-heavy hybrid strain will allow you to feel like you’re sinking down into your bed. It’s high THC content and ability to put you to sleep fairly quickly make God’s Gift an excellent nighttime strain. God’s Gift will give your mellow chamomile tea the boost it needs for a well rested night.

Yogi’s Caramel Bedtime & Vanilla Kush

Yogi tea brand makes a special Soothing Caramel Bedtime tea that is out of this world. Not only does this tea taste like dessert in drink form, but it also helps you ease into a peaceful night’s sleep. With ingredients like chamomile, rooibos, roasted chicory, and skullcap, this tea is a delicious way to help relax at the end of the day, soothing both your body and mind.

And what better strain to pair it with than Vanilla Kush? This award winning strain is a potent, high THC indica that will give you a nice, heavy body buzz while also helping to clear your mind of any intrusive thoughts. The notes of vanilla in the Kush will play beautifully with the sweetness of the Soothing Caramel Bedtime tea. This pairing is truly one of the tastiest ways to ensure a good night’s sleep!
